Completing the VHF course, can now be achieved by people from all walks of life. If you find it a struggle to get time off from work then the RYA's new interactive service suits you.

The online VHF course allows you to complete the course in your own time at your own speed. The course is very interactive and provides a good challenge and has both theoretical and practical elements to it.

To sign up to this course, please contact our sales team who will guide you through the process.

  • Step 1: Provide various details to our sales team, and process the payment.

  • Step 2: The sales team will email you login details where you can access and download the course from the RYA Interactive website. A VHF handbook or eBook will be sent to you.

  • Step 3: Complete the course, download and print the course completion certificate. (You will need to bring this with you on your exam)

  • Step 4: Call our sales team to see when we are next running a VHF exam for you to attend.

RYA Interactive Course Access Details

To enable access to your online course we need to share some of your personal data with the RYA via your user profile in RYA Interactive. This learning management website is hosted and maintained by a third party called Learning Pool, who will not use your personal information for any reason other than enabling your course.

Your name and email address will be entered on RYA Interactive in order to create your user account. On your first access to the site, you will be asked to enter your address and date of birth. You will have access to the site for one year in order to complete your online course. During this period, your personal information will be held on the website by Learning Poll and be available to this training centre and the RYA for the purpose of managing your course.

Instructional support will be provided by this training centre for the duration of you course booking.

On completion of your course, your name, email address, date of birth and address will be transferred to the RYA’s central database for the purpose of recording details of the course and any certification you gain as a result of it. This information allows the RYA to record your certification, to update any records they may already hold about you or your qualifications and to verify your certificate if required. After one year from the date of your enrolment on the course your user account will be removed from RYA Interactive.

The objective of the course is to familiarise the user in the dangerous goods requirements of the Workboat Code and the relevant parts and chapters of the IMDG Code. The course covers all training requirements outlined in Appendix 5 of the Workboat Code. The Day Skipper Theory Course is a comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers. The course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.

The Coastal/Yachtmaster Theory Course requires pre-course knowledge to Day Skipper Theory level. It brings an understanding of secondary ports, a greater knowledge of tidal streams & heights, weather, safety and position fixing in much greater detail.

Students wishing to achieve the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory certificate should be at Coastal/Yachtmaster Theory level with their existing theory. Apart from a thorough knowledge of position fixing and plotting the course requires a good understanding of latitude and longitude.

Anyone requiring an ICC valid for inland waters must pass the CEVNI Test. A valid ICC is often required for cruising Europe’s inland waters. To validate your ICC (International Certificate of Competence) for inland waters you must take the CEVNI test, which checks your knowledge of the rules and signs that skippers of pleasure craft are expected to know and follow.
