RYA Yachtmaster Theory

This course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Yachtmaster™ Coastal and Yachtmaster™ Offshore practical exams, concentrating on advanced navigation and meteorology skills.

Description

As with the Day Skipper shorebased course, this course is taught over 40 hours with exam papers in addition to this. Students will also be required to complete homework. It generally runs over several weekends or 6 consecutive - and intense - days,

This course can be attended at one of our training centres. 

Candidates should be reasonably numerate, already at Day Skipper Theory standard and able to compute Estimated Position and Course to Steer vectors.

  • Course shaping and plotting,

  • Tidal knowledge,

  • Use of almanacs and admiralty publications,

  • Electronic position finding equipment,

  • Taking and interpreting forecasts,

  • Plotting weather systems,

  • Weather predictions using a barometer and by observation,

  • Collision regulations,

  • Customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad.

 

Suitable for: Those using workboats, powerboats, motor cruisers and sailing yachts that wish to explore unfamiliar waters and travel further offshore.

Duration: The course is 40 hours plus homework and exams. Taught over 6 days.

Included: Course materials, Handbook, use of RYA Almanac and Portland Plotter & Dividers.

Student to Instructor Ratio: 12:1 max.

Prerequisite: Knowledge equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Theory

More Information

The course is designed for officers in charge of a navigational watch, for experienced officers and those with navigational responsibilities. It is based on the Merchant Navy Training Board and IMO 1.27 Model Course syllabus. The training aims to equip the student with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to keep a safe navigational watch using electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS), interfaced with other onboard equipment to maintain safety of navigation.
