MCA Small Ships Navigation & Radar

Radar and Electronic Chart Systems are common place on small commercial vessels and workboats, and when used correctly can be very versatile aids to navigation.

Description

On the 13th December 2023, vessels coded under the MCA Workboat Code Edition 3 are now required to hold the new MCA courses for electronic chart systems and radar stated in table A5.3. iPowerboat Ltd have MCA approval to run the MCA Electronic Chart Systems (approved) and Bridge Watchkeeping Procedures and the MCA Radar & Meteorology courses.

The courses can be delivered as a 5 day course, with a certificate issued for each part. The Electronic Charts Systems & Bridge Watchkeeping Procedures course is 3 days, and the Radar and Meteorology being the remaining 2 days. It is possible to complete the elements individually.

MGN 691 was released by the MCA in December 2023 which states existing seafarers who have completed the SQA Units for Electronic Chart Systems (ECS) and Radar training will continue to be able to use these qualifications as evidence of meeting the training requirements for Workboat Code edition 2 and Workboat Code 3 providing the training was completed prior to the 31st March 2024.

The courses are delivered using our IMO and STCW compliant simulator that allows the instructor to create dynamic situations such as collision courses, meteorology and hazards to name a few.

Prerequisites

Knowledge equivalent of RYA Day Skipper Theory. Basic chart plotting is required. 

Similar courses

The MCA approved Fire Safety course is aimed at skippers and crew of small workboats and small commercial vessels. The course has been launched primarily to meeting the manning requirements of Workboat Code 3. The course also meets the requirements for those applying for their MCA Boatmaster Licence (BML).

More Information

The MCA Stability for Workboats, Pilot Boats and Small Commercial Vessels (SCV) has been introduced to meet the requirements in the Workboat Code Edition 2 and Edition 3 for crew to attend an approved stability course. This course meets the requirements of Appendix 3, 2.14 Stability Training of the code of practice.
