Basic maintenance and engine care will help ensure that you are not part of this statistic. Most engine problems can be avoided by taking simple precautions, and you don't need a detailed mechanical knowledge. This course teaches you how your engine works, how to keep it healthy, and how to get it started again in the event of a breakdown.

The AEC 2 is the second half to the full AEC qualification. It is a 35 hour, 5 day enhanced course. The aim is to give the basic training to the engineer officers who want to pursue a career on 'Small Vessels'. The necessary training outlines the certification structure, examination and training requirements. It also explains the regulatory requirements regarding the implementation of intended training elements.

The RYA Powerboat Instructor (PBI) Skills Assessment is a half-day course, lasting a minimum of 4 hours, that assesses a candidate's powerboat handling and theoretical knowledge to ensure they meet the required standard to attend the subsequent RYA Powerboat Instructor course. This compulsory pre-entry assessment covers practical skills like boat handling and man overboard recovery, along with theoretical knowledge including charts, tides, and Colregs.

You'll also need a valid First Aid Certificate, the RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate, a health declaration form or medical questionnaire, and five seasons' experience of powerboating logged (preferably in range of boat types and sizes) OR one season for those who use powerboats as an integral part of their normal full-time occupation.

The RYA VHF Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels.
