RYA Day Skipper Theory

A comprehensive introduction nautical theory for inexperienced skippers.

Description

This course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night time powerboating. The course teaches both traditional and electronic navigation techniques.

The course is usually taught over 5 consecutive days, and whilst it can at times be challenging, the rewards and the level of knowledge obtained upon completion is quite satisfying.

Our courses go the extra mile to ensure whether you're working in a commercial setting or doing the course for your own use, you understand how to apply your new found knowledge. The courses are suitable for any person using a workboat, powerboat, motor cruiser and yachts.

 

About this course.

Course topics include:

  • The basics of seamanship

  • The essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage

  • Chartwork

  • Electronic charts

  • Position fixing

  • Plotting a course to steer

  • Weather forecasting and meteorology

  • Tides

  • Collision regulations

  • Construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat

  • Emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety Harnesses, lifejackets and life rafts.

 

Suitable for: inexperienced skippers using workboats, powerboats, motor cruisers and sailing yachts.

Duration: The course is 40 hours plus homework and exams. Taught over 6 days. 

Included: Course materials, handbook, use of RYA Almanac and Portland Plotter & Dividers.

Student to Instructor Ratio: 12:1 max.

More Information

The course is designed for officers in charge of a navigational watch, for experienced officers and those with navigational responsibilities. It is based on the Merchant Navy Training Board and IMO 1.27 Model Course syllabus. The training aims to equip the student with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to keep a safe navigational watch using electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS), interfaced with other onboard equipment to maintain safety of navigation.
